How it started
Like a lot of people, during the Covid-19 pandemic I listened to a LOT of podcasts. In those long and lonely days I wanted to feel connection with my peers, to feel like I was still a part of the music world that I so love being a part of. I started to notice that most music podcasts were part of press runs and they weren’t giving me that hit of geeking out over a new historical discovery or new instrument build, late night putting-the-world-to-rights conversations about music’s role in our technological era, the futility of competition, the impact of class structure on music education, the quirks and pitfalls of the traditional classical etiquette system.
So I decided to create what I longed to listen to and Fret Not was born. Along with a guest roster of my friends I started putting together episodes of long, rambling conversations about everything to do with music and the world that it inhabits. We talked about everything: childhood stardom, blooming late, the death of the ego, building yourself as a musician, confidence, anxiety, honesty, perfection, truth perseverance, vulnerability, self esteem. I found that every conversation had its own flavour and its own lessons to take from it and I found immense joy in being able to contribute to the often lonely and siloed music world a catalogue of friendly chats about what I think are the most important topics about music and art.
Introducing Video
Despite speaking mostly face to face with guests, the podcast remained an audio only format until last year. This was mainly because I was scared at the prospect of video editing having only just gotten to grips with audio editing. After managing to invite a big guest on to the show - Sir Brian May - for the second time(!), I decided to take the leap and plunge head first into the video podcast world. It IS a lot more work, but it‘s extremely rewarding being able to see the guests at ease chatting about these deep and winding topics. It also means that listeners can now support the continuation of the podcast’s creation just through watching on Youtube, as I’ve never wanted to charge to listen to the episodes.
I’m so grateful to every single listener who contributes or has contributed to the ecosystem of the podcast world!
A new era
In autumn 2026 I decided that it was time to let go of the wonderful guitar-pun title that had been with the podcast since I was first brainstorming names with Elias Blumm, who worked for my initial sponsor, Augustine Strings.
I wanted the name of the show to reflect more of the world that I hope to create, which includes other types of musicians, not just guitarists(!). The Fret Not era of the podcast taught me that great conversations are out there waiting to be had, all you need to do is pick up your mics and get out there. I really look forward to expanding the podcast in every direction I can think of, if there’s a guest or topic you would like to hear as a listener, or if you are a musician with a story to tell or a thought to unpick don’t hesitate to get in contact, I love hearing from potential guests and listeners of the pod!
